Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant: Remembering June Johnson

In the early hours of August 11, our CMF family said goodbye to a beloved missionary, colleague, and friend. June Johnson passed away peacefully in Germany after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by dear friends who loved her deeply.

For more than two decades, June faithfully served Christ through ministry in Ukraine, and in recent years through her work among Ukrainian refugees in Germany. While circumstances and locations changed over the years, one thing remained constant: June's unwavering commitment to helping people experience the love of Jesus.

Prior to the war in Ukraine, June served there for 24 years, building relationships and strengthening ministries that cared for orphans, children with special needs, high-risk families, churches, medical needs, and a Christian rehabilitation center. Even after relocating to Germany in response to the refugee crisis, her heart remained firmly connected to Ukraine. She continued supporting multiple national ministries, helping equip local believers as they served as the hands and feet of Christ in the midst of war.

But June's legacy cannot be measured simply by years served or ministries supported. Those who knew her will remember something even greater: the way she reflected Christ wherever she went.

In the final months of her life, June faced immense physical challenges following a cancer diagnosis. Yet those around her continually witnessed a joy and gratitude that seemed to transcend her circumstances. Medical professionals caring for her often remarked how different she was from other patients. Rather than focusing on herself, June was encouraging the very people who were caring for her, consistently pointing them toward Jesus.

Even during her final weeks in the hospital, June's concern was for others. She encouraged visitors to enjoy her favorite pizza restaurant, made people laugh with songs and spontaneous dances to "Dancing Queen," prayed regularly for family, friends, ministry partners, and future missionaries, and remained actively concerned for ministry needs in Ukraine. She savored small gifts, celebrated friendships, and continued thinking of ways to bless those around her.

Perhaps one of the clearest windows into June's heart comes from the last ministry update she wrote earlier this year. Reflecting on her changing role in ministry, June wrestled honestly with questions about significance and purpose. After years filled with large ministries, conferences, camps, medical outreach, and visible impact, she found herself serving in quieter ways through medical advocacy, caregiving, translation, and refugee support.

Through that journey, God reminded her of an enduring truth.

"You are a shepherd. Will you be content with this that I have called you to for now?" she recalled God asking her.

June came to recognize that faithfulness was never about having a prominent role. It was about obedience. She concluded her update with words that now stand as a fitting summary of her life:

"The truth - it is an honor to be a shepherd under The Shepherd and to have any role – big or unnoticed – in His redemption story.

Praise God for His grace in giving me any role in His great act of redemption.

May I prove to be faithful."

And faithful she was.

Throughout her decades of ministry, June served in ways both visible and unseen. She cared for vulnerable families, supported churches, encouraged ministry partners, advocated for refugees, and invested deeply in people. She did not seek recognition. Instead, she sought to follow Christ wherever He led, trusting Him through every season.

Today we grieve her loss, but we also give thanks for a life well lived and a race well run. We rejoice knowing that the Savior whom June loved, served, and proclaimed has now welcomed her home.

Please join us in praying for June's family, friends, ministry partners, and the many people in Ukraine and Germany whose lives were touched by her faithful witness. And as we remember June, may we be challenged by her example to embrace whatever role God places before us, whether prominent or unseen, and to serve with the same humility, joy, and faithfulness that marked her life.

Well done, good and faithful servant.
