Learning and Growing: Grant and Kaylee’s Time at ECHO
Grant and Kaylee began their ministry in West Africa with CMF in early 2023, serving among an unreached people group where less than one percent identify as Christian. Their work is deeply relational and practical. Grant partners with teammates on a gardening initiative called “Gardens of Faithfulness,” which equips families to grow small gardens that combat food insecurity while building trust and community. Kaylee focuses on children and youth outreach, helping lead health clubs that teach preventative health lessons alongside Bible stories, and girls’ health clubs that highlight God’s love for His creation through Scripture.
Currently on furlough in the U.S., Grant and Kaylee spent six weeks at the ECHO North America Impact Center, a global research farm in Fort Myers, Florida. ECHO exists to empower small-scale farmers worldwide with sustainable agricultural solutions, and for Grant and Kaylee, it was an unforgettable experience.
Community and Connection
One of the greatest joys of their time at ECHO was connecting with interns and staff. Many on the ECHO team have served overseas, and several interns are discerning what international ministry might look like for them. Sharing their own story—how God led them to West Africa—opened meaningful conversations about calling and discernment. They even bonded with an intern from Chad, enjoying conversations in French!
Hands-On Learning
The six weeks at ECHO were packed with learning. Grant explored practical techniques like building with bamboo, growing plants in minimal soil, using black soldier fly larvae for chicken feed, creating DIY water pumps, and storing seeds effectively. Kaylee discovered the nutritional properties of plants through visitors from Food Plants International, an organization that has documented over 35,000 edible plants worldwide. She also learned about harvesting practices, women’s involvement in farming, and the fascinating art of tree grafting.
A Global Gathering
Their final week at ECHO coincided with the organization’s annual conference, a highlight of their stay. They met missionaries and international workers from around the world and connected with ECHO’s West Africa director and his wife—relationships that could prove invaluable for their future ministry.
Tasting the Unexpected
Life on the farm brought unique culinary adventures! Grant and Kaylee sampled miracle fruit, peanut butter fruit, Barbados cherries, monstera, prickly pear, and jackfruit. They also joined in weekly harvests of fruits, vegetables, and edible leaves—a hands-on reminder of the beauty and abundance of God’s creation.
Finding Spiritual Nourishment
Beyond agriculture, the community at ECHO blessed them spiritually. They were invited to Mission Community Church, where they found a vibrant group passionate about living as Christian witnesses in Fort Myers. Weekly fellowship gatherings with worship, testimonies, and shared meals added another layer of encouragement during their furlough.
Grant and Kaylee left ECHO refreshed, equipped, and inspired. The knowledge they gained and the relationships they built will ripple into their ministry in West Africa—helping them serve with creativity, sustainability, and faithfulness.
